World Rabies Day | Social Media Campaign

World Rabies Day | Social Media Campaign

November 12-14, 2020

Dow University of Health Sciences

November 12-14, 2020

Online

Event Details:

World Rabies Day falls on 28th September and is celebrated around the world. In a developing country like Pakistan, where stray dogs and subsequently dog bites are still common, cases of Rabies are frequently seen. With this campaign, we wanted to emphasize that Rabies is 100% fatal but also 100% preventable.

The first poster on “World Rabies Day” was posted on September 28, 2020, to celebrate the relevant day. However, due to the ongoing Malaria and Dengue Relief Campaign at that time, this campaign was put on hold until November 12, 2020. The online campaign was done over 3 days from 12th Nov – 14th Nov on social media platforms of VFAHT-DUHS (FB and Instagram) and highlighted the different aspects of rabies, its management, and its prevention.

The campaign especially drew attention to the 100% preventability of rabies and emphasized how a rabid dog should be dealt with, which is something often mismanaged and overlooked in our setting. We think it was successful in delivering the message we intended on conveying.

Event Details:

This workshop was organized by VFAHT DUHS in collaboration with Patients’ Welfare Association (PWA)

This workshop was designed for medical students, and was aimed at spreading knowledge regarding safe blood donation practices (the domain of our partner organization), Hepatitis B & C (with special emphasis on its transmission and prevention), and debunking common myths surrounding it.

Our event started with PWA’s 15-minute presentation on the importance of blood screening. This was then followed by a short fun activity where the participants were required to come up with as many small words as they can using the word Hepatitis.

Next, VFAHT was introduced by our Local Council member, Areeba, and then a presentation was delivered by Dr. Aiman Sheikh, covering the basics of Hepatitis B & C. After this, an activity was conducted, where various statements regarding Hepatitis were displayed to the participants and they were required to identify whether they were myths or facts. The event was eventually concluded by taking feedback from all the participants, and asking them about the one new thing they learnt from the workshop.

All the participants were made to fill a pre & post assessment form aimed to assess their knowledge about Hepatitis before and after the workshop. E-certificates were handed out to them afterwards.

In conclusion, we believe that this workshop was successful in achieving its aims, and was very well-received by all participants.

Social Media Coronavirus Awareness Campaign

March 13, 2020 – March 17, 2020
Dow University of Health Sciences

March 13, 2020 - March 17, 2020

Online Campaign

Event Details:

The novel coronavirus, first detected in Wuhan, China in December 2019 quickly spread throughout the world. The first case was detected in Pakistan on February 26, 2020, following which schools and workplaces were shut down and cities went into lockdowns.

Considering this, VFAHT-DUHS’ Zoonotic and Media Division collaborated to conduct a social media awareness campaign regarding coronavirus. The activity covered the following topics:

  • What is the coronavirus? How does it spread?
  • Symptoms of COVID-19
  • Precautionary Measures to be taken
  • How to wash your hands properly
  • Advisory on wearing a mask (according to WHO)

The activity was a Social Media campaign, as it is the primary medium of awareness during the lockdown. It was initiated on March 9, 2020, on the Facebook and Instagram pages of the VFAHT-DUHS Local council. One poster was uploaded each day covering one of the above-stated topics, in the following sequence:

9th March: What is Coronavirus? How does it spread?

10th March: Symptoms of COVID-19

11th March: Safety Precautions

12th March: How to Wash Hands

14th March: Advisory on wearing a mask

The activity was concluded on 14th March 2020. All information in the posters had been collected by the members of the Zoonotic division and was from authentic sources (WHO, CDC). The posts were shared by Local council members, and the Media division kept a record of the reach and response of each post.

Early March was a time of uncertainty and confusion for many. Information about the symptoms and precautionary methods of COVID-19 was not known to the common person.

As COVID-19 was declared a pandemic on March 11, 2020, by WHO (during the progression of our online activity), VFAHT’s platform served as a source of knowledge and guidance.
