Event Details:

The project was a collaboration with the Society for Promoting Innovation in Education (SPIE) at AKU and aimed to provide an insight into the basics of literature review. It aimed to cover basic concepts of research, its importance, and the process, with the focus being primarily on literature review. Dr. Sadia Fatima highlighted several key aspects, a few of which were: the rule of the quotation, referencing, and finding journals for submission.

The project started with Dr. Sadia Fatima giving her presentation and holding an interactive discussion with the participants and then proceeded with activities conducted by VFAHT and SPIE members. The mentors- Russel Seth Martins, Asma Akbar Ladak, Umer Junaid, Mussaab Munir Cheema, Ronika Devi Ukrani, and Hassan Raza Raja divided participants into small groups in break out rooms. Topics of discussion included:

  • Clinical Features of HIV
  • Progress in Vaccine Development
  • Prevention of HIV transmission
  • New Avenues for Treatments/Management

Activity 1 required the participants to do a literature search for the given topic using the 3 web sites and note the number of papers available in the chatbox: Google Scholar PubMedPak Medinet.

Activity 2 required participants to write one paragraph on the topic with 2-3 references imported through Endnote. The meeting was recorded using Zoom and was concluded with questions and feedback from participants. The project was exceptionally well received and highly praised by the participants. It managed to give not only a basic understanding of literature review through the initial presentation but also contributed extensively with the utilization of activities led by our mentors.

World Hygiene day is internationally observed on the 5th of May. During this pandemic, when the whole world is reeling under the onslaught of COVID19, hand hygiene is the most pivotal area of preventive practice to safeguard us all from getting infected.

In this endeavor, VFAHT UOL LC in collaboration with VFAHT- FJMU LC organized an awareness program as well as a unique competition on hand hygiene under the title “CLEAN HANDS SAFE HANDS”

It had two components;

  • Poster series
  • Picture Competition

All local councils of VFAHT participated in the competition.  It gave wide publicity to the event by reloading and recirculating it through various social network modes.

Event Details:

The purpose of our social media campaign was to create awareness among the public about various asthma triggers immediate precautionary measures that can be taken to avoid any future health consequences. 2 posters were made and shared on various social media platforms (Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp) by all the members of the council to create awareness.

Enlightening the public masses about various health conditions is necessary especially for those who can be managed by taking timely precautions. Severe asthmatic reactions can also be avoided by keeping the triggers and precautions in mind.

The use of illegal drugs or the use of over-the-counter prescription drugs in excessive amounts or for purposes other than the intended use is categorized as drug abuse, which is becoming an ever-increasing problem in recent times. The International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking was recognized by VFAHT SZMC local council on 26th June 2020. Infographic posters were made & shared on the respective Facebook page. The informative posters highlighted the co-relation of drug abuse and the increased risk of Infectious Diseases.

Plasma donation inforgraphics- A collaboration between the Local Councils of VFAHT FJMU and AIMC. The infoposters were being shared on the respective Faceook pages of both LCs. It was aimed at creating awareness about the convalescent plasma donation of healthy and recovered COVID 19 patients. The infoposters answered several FAQs and addressed several myths regarding plasma donation. The overall online campaign was a successful one. A total of 5 posters were shared with a public message.

Event Details:

“Blood saves lives, but it can need saving too” was planned for June with the main aim to spread more awareness about blood-borne diseases and plasma donation, in light of World blood donors day and COVID-19. During this time, plasma donation is essential, and it is necessary to not just encourage recovered patients for it, but also remove any associated myths.

Instagram and Facebook were used as platforms for the dissemination of information, and we kept our activities engaging by injecting story elements in our daily questions, making it more interesting for a layman to participate. All material was shared in the form of posters.

The activity received a good response and giving a story aspect to information helped convey the message better.

Every year, on 14 June, countries around the world celebrate World Blood Donor Day (WBDD). The event serves to raise awareness of the need for safe blood and blood products and to thank blood donors for their life-saving gifts of blood. When the whole world is reeling under the onslaught of COVID- 19, Blood donation has taken a serious hit amid this outbreak & blood is in short supply, leaving patients of thalassemia & others to suffer. Also, we know that Convalescent plasma is a rich source of antibodies that can kill the virus & help treat corona patients. For someone who is recovered from COVID-19, their plasma donation can make a huge difference & they may be able to save a life.

In this context, VFAHT SZMC LC is organizing an awareness program & a picture competition among medical students depicting blood donation under the title “Donate blood save lives”.

Several participants sent their entries. Total of 54 participants participates in the event.

Literature Review Competition on HIV Vaccine Awareness Day

Event Details:

A literature review competition was organized by AKU-LC in collaboration with the VFAHT LC at STMU in accordance with the HIV Vaccine Awareness Day. This competition was preceded by a session titled ‘Path to Publications’ where a renowned faculty from AKU taught medical students about how to conduct a literature search and write a literature review. Methods for referencing through EndNote and Mendeley were also taught.

The submissions were thoroughly read and graded according to set criteria by Project Director for Research and Publications Musab Munir Cheema and President LC Farzeen Fatima Syed. The first prize was won by Sarah Karim Hudani for her literature review titled ‘Effective Management of Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV)’. The second position was secured by Elina Nizar Ali for ‘Clinical features of HIV and it’s associated problems’ and finally Syed Mohammad Mehmood Abbas and Ali Haider Bangash secured the third position for ‘Exploring the role of AI in helping us understand HIV AIDS parthenogenesis’.

The deadline for this competition was May 31, 2020, and three entries were received within the deadline from AKU and STMU. This was advertised in the session Path to Publications and through our social media pages.

Winners of the competition were announced through the official VFAHT AKU pages and e-certificates were emailed to the organizing committee and winners of the competition. The abstracts of the winning literature reviews will also be published on the official IPAC foundation website.
